Mesh was commissioned by Banyule City Council to develop a Concept Design for Lillimur Avenue to enhance its role as a key east-west connection identified as part of the Heidelberg West Business Park Masterplan.
The streetscape aligns with the Banyule Public Realm Framework’s principles of innovation, sustainability and activation. The design promotes safety, pedestrian movement and environmental sustainability through traffic calming, high-quality amenities and integrated blue-green infrastructure, while reflecting the site’s history and fostering a biodiverse, climate-responsive streetscape. Throughout the process of designing the concept design for Lillimur Avenue, Mesh undertook a thorough study of the existing streetscape dynamics to understand the existing conditions we would integrate and/or look to change moving forward into the design. In understanding Council’s ambitions for Lillimur Avenue, Mesh progressed to produce a series of Options Testing sketch concepts that explored the upgrade of the streetscape from the least complex and most conducive to the existing conditions to the most ambitious and complex option that would all align with Council’s vision for the streetscape. This testing allowed for in-depth internal discussions within Council departments and resulted in a preferred concept design to be chosen. This concept was then further refined and packaged for Council to use to bid for future construction budget for the streetscape upgrade and works.
